Short Term Storage

Short term storage in Texas at Yellow Door Storage in Argyle and Van Alstyne.

Most storage searches that use the word short term are not really asking about duration. They are asking a different question: do I need to overthink this. A closing date that slipped two weeks, a renovation that will be done by fall, a move that is really just a few boxes until the new place is ready, none of these need the same planning as a year long rental, and treating them that way usually means paying for protection or space the situation never called for.

At a Glance

  • Both our Texas locations see steady month to month turnover, not just long stays. Lantana logged 181 move ins against 155 move outs this year through mid October, and Van Alstyne logged 306 move ins against 214 move outs over the same stretch, so short term renters are a real, regular part of who moves through these facilities, not an edge case.
  • A short term rental rarely needs climate control the way a multi month rental does. Texas heat and cold snaps do real damage over repeated months of exposure, but a few weeks in a standard unit is a different risk profile entirely.

Why Short Term Gets Treated Like Long Term, and Why It Should Not

Storage facilities, ours included, are set up around month to month leases, which is the right structure for flexibility but creates a strange effect: a renter who needs a unit for three weeks often gets steered through the same decisions as a renter who needs it for a year. Same size chart, same climate control pitch, same list of add ons. For a short stay, several of those decisions genuinely do not matter as much, and a few matter in the opposite direction from what the longer term advice assumes.

The clearest sign that short stays are common, not rare, is in our own numbers. At Lantana, 181 units saw a move in against 155 move outs through the first ten and a half months of this year. Van Alstyne saw an even higher volume, 306 move ins against 214 move outs over the same stretch. A good share of that turnover is renters who were never planning to stay long, which is exactly who this page is for.

Sizing for a Short Stay Is a Different Problem

On a long rental, getting the size wrong costs you months of either wasted space or repeated repacking. On a short rental, the bigger risk is overpaying for a size that was really only needed because nobody wanted to think too hard about it under time pressure. If you are storing the contents of a one bedroom apartment for six weeks between leases, a 10x10 is usually enough, and jumping to a 10x15 out of caution adds a real cost for a month and a half that a slightly tighter pack would have avoided.

The other sizing question that matters more for short stays than long ones is access. If you are actively pulling things in and out, staging a move, or living out of a storage unit between addresses for a few weeks, a slightly larger unit that lets you walk in and reach what you need without unstacking everything is worth the extra cost. That tradeoff flips the usual sizing advice: for a short stay with frequent access, a bit of breathing room pays for itself quickly; for a short stay where the unit gets packed once and opened once, tight and efficient is the better call.

Climate Control Matters Less Here, Not More

A lot of storage marketing treats climate control as something everyone should want regardless of how long they are renting. For a short stay, that advice mostly does not apply. The damage climate control protects against, repeated heat cycles, humidity swings, temperature shock to wood and electronics, happens over months of exposure, not over three or four weeks. If what you are storing would survive sitting in a garage for a month, it will almost certainly survive a short stay in a standard drive up unit.

There are exceptions. Anything genuinely sensitive, instruments, certain electronics, photographs or documents, is worth the upgrade even for a short stay, simply because the items themselves are fragile regardless of duration. But a short term renter moving standard furniture and boxes for a few weeks is usually paying for protection the timeline does not justify. Our climate controlled storage page goes into which items actually benefit, if you are unsure where yours falls.

What to Actually Check Before a Short Rental

A short term rental has its own version of fine print worth reading, even more than a long one. Minimum rental periods matter here directly, since a facility that bills in full month increments means a three week stay still costs a full month, which changes the math on timing your move in and move out dates. It is also worth asking directly about any move in promotion’s terms, since a discounted first month sometimes assumes a longer stay to qualify, which does not help a genuinely short rental.

Reservation flexibility is worth checking too. Plans change on short timelines more than long ones, since a short term need is often itself the result of something changing on short notice, a closing date, a lease end, a project timeline. Knowing how easy it is to adjust a reservation before committing saves a scramble later.

Where Short Term Overlaps With Moving

A large share of short term storage searches are really moving searches wearing a different label. If that describes your situation specifically around our Lantana location, our guide for new homeowners storing in Lantana walks through the timing side of that in more detail, and if you are closer to Van Alstyne, our 2026 guide to renting smart in Van Alstyne covers similar ground for that market.

Finding the Right Setup for a Short Stay

Yellow Door Storage runs both locations on month to month terms, which is what makes a short rental genuinely simple instead of a commitment dressed up as flexibility. Our Lantana facility in Argyle and our Van Alstyne location both carry a range of sizes suited to a shorter stay, and either team can help you size the unit around the actual weeks involved rather than defaulting to the same advice given to someone renting for a year. You can check current availability for either location directly through Yellow Door Storage.
